Three Niners Make MiLB Debuts

Ryan opened the Arizona Summer League season on 6/21 as the starting first baseman for the Tempe (AZL) Angels. In his debut, Rivers went (0-3) with three strikeouts. He was also charged with a fielding error, in the 2-8 Loss to the AZL Athletics. As of 6/23, Ryan Rivers was listed as an outfielder not a first baseman on the roster.

Harvey attended and played baseball for Bandy's High School in Catawba, NC. After graduating in 1981, Bryan attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He played as a 49er from 1982-1984. On August 20, 1984, Bryan Harvey was signed as an undrafted free agent by the California Angels. Several years of Minor League Baseball passed for Harvey, but on May 16, 1987 Bryan Harvey made his Major League debut for the California Angels, the team he continued to pitch for until 1992. In 1988, Harvey was 2nd in AL Rookie of the Year voting to Oakland's Walt Weiss and was The Sporting News' Rookie Pitcher of the Year. In 1991, the closer was selected to play in the All-Star game and also led the American League with 46 saves. On November 17, 1992 Harvey was selected as the 20th pick in the 1992 expansion draft to add the Florida Marlins. In his first season as a Marlin, 1993, he was selected to yet another All-Star game. He continued to plays for the Marlins through 1995 when he was granted free agency. Bryan Harvey then re-signed with the California Angels, but never again saw the Major League diamond. His career ended after returning home and playing 2 games with the Charlotte Knights in 1997.
